The 1,000 fan formula. What is it and how can you – an independent musician, artist, producer – use this concept to make a full-time living from your passion with only 1,000 true fans?
A couple of years ago I compiled an article of 50 indie music artist and producer tips that helped me along the way to turn my passion for music into a full-time income. At the end of that post, I included a bonus with a link to the 1,000 fan formula.
Introduction
As you continue to attract and grow your fan base, you’ll develop a varying degree of fans. In particular, the different levels of financial support they’re willing to give you. And you’ve probably already experienced this, but here are a few examples.
Fan Level #1 – “Casual Fan”
You’ll have certain followers who are only apt to click the “Like” button on one of your Facebook posts, or maybe share some of your music from time to time – but they’ve never actually bought your music, beats, services, etc. This could be for a number of reasons. Maybe they’ve just discovered you recently and are still getting to know, like and trust you. Or maybe they’ve been following you for years and are never actually going to put any money down for your cause. And that’s okay, because we need all levels of fans in order to be successful. 🙂 This level of fan is generally interested in your music and what you’re about, but is not contributing to support you financially at the current moment.
Fan Level #2 – “Supporter”
This level of fan has actually shown some sort of financial support. Maybe they bought your single off iTunes, or possibly opted into your mailing list and purchased your pre-sale offer. But overall, they haven’t consistently supported you. The good news is because they’ve already spent money with you once, they’ll be magnitudes more likely to buy your music in the future and eventually turn into the level #3 fan.
Fan Level #3 – “Hardcore/True Fan”
These are the fans who are fanatics, or what is described as a “true fan” – someone who has supported you time and time again, project after project. This is the group of hardcore fans who you can rely on to support you long term. They make up the core group of who you really need to make the 1,000 true fans formula work.
1,000 True Fans
So in a nutshell, the 1,000 fan formula states that if you have 1,000 “true fans” who are willing to support you at a $100 investment annually, you have the potential to make $100,000 per year off your music.
1,000 True Fans x $100/year = $100,000/year
And for most independent musicians, producers and artists – that’s a pretty substantial living. Now if your goal is to make more per year, you can obviously scale up from that. But generally speaking, this gives you a good place to start and something to strive for.
One of the primary reasons I continue to post music marketing and branding videos on my YouTube channel and blog is to help aspiring musicians like yourself earn these types of true fans, so that you can live off your passion too 🙂
1,000 true fans doesn’t happen overnight. It takes work, time, money and resources – but there’s a lot of valuable information in this concept and I wish you all the success in your music endeavors!
