5 Music Marketing Tips: How to ENGAGE Your Fanbase!

If you’re a music artist struggling to effectively promote your music online and build a buzz… here are five proven music marketing tips to help you engage your existing fanbase and continue to grow a much larger following.

Social media platforms are a great start to really connect with your fans and build relationships. You probably already know this much, however most artists aren’t executing their “promotion” strategies effectively at all.

What do I mean exactly? Well, many of them continue to only post links to their music… and that’s it.  Or worse, tagging everyone on Facebook or Twitter spamming a link to people who don’t even want to hear from them in the first place.

The problem is EVERYONE is posting links to their music… doing the exact same thing as the next struggling artist just trying to “make it”.

So how do you actually cut through all the clutter and noise? And reach the fans who want to hear your music and really build deeper connections with them?

The reality is that it requires much more than good music alone to build a successful music career in 2015.  In fact, it requires that you be very strategic about how you leverage the various social outlets to your advantage.

So how do you actually do it?

Hands down, one of the most effective ways is by providing valuable and quality content to your target audience.  In particular, video content.

Now let me first say this.  What is valued by your target fanbase may be subjective, and it might take you testing some things out to figure out what actually works best for you and your specific music goals.

Nonetheless, I’ve compiled a list of five general music marketing tips to help you engage your fanbase using video content.

These strategies will help you to come across more professional to your viewers, build more depth with existing fans and attract new ones, as well as stand out from the majority of other aspiring artists and help to further catapult your music career.

1. Professional Music Videos

Every successful music artist, whether they’re on their independent grind or signed to a major label, releases professional music videos for their music. This is magnitudes more appealing than only linking people to your latest single or album, and as a result you’ll engage many more people to watch and listen!

I personally would much rather watch a music video than just listen to the music itself. It stimulates both visual and auditory senses, and if it’s dope, the user retention will most likely be higher in the “ADHD” prominent world we live in.

2. Recorded Interviews

Yet another simple and proven form of video content to engage fans, and at the same time educate your following to know you a bit better.

I’m always very interested to hear what my favorite emcee or producer has to say about what’s going on with them at the current moment. And if the questions are good,I typically get a lot of great insight that I wouldn’t get from the music alone.

There are multiple ways to approach this, especially if you already have connections with people in the music and entertainment industry.

But even if you have limited connections, you can also stage your own video interviews.  You can easily put together your own questions to answer. Record, edit, upload and boom! You’ve now got a piece of quality content that your fans will really appreciate.

3. Vlogs (Day-in-the-life, etc. Get creative!)

I don’t see much of this type of content from up and coming music artists, but I’m not entirely sure why.  Because this content kills!  Just look at some of the really popular vlogging channels on YouTube. People love to be voyeurs – get an unscripted and transparent look into your life.  There are many ways you can flip this idea and make content that your fans will undoubtedly engage with and thoroughly enjoy. But be unique and have fun with this. And again, I want to stress – get creative!

4. In-studio Sessions

Although your vlogs don’t necessarily all have to be music related, you may want to record some in-studio sessions or other music related video content as well.  Have you ever seen Ryan Leslie’s in-studio session videos?  I bet you can’t watch just one 😉

5. Compelling Instagram Vids

For those of you who are heavy users of Instagram, use those 15 second video clips for something more compelling than just a link to your new song.  You could take clips from a previously recorded vlog, music video, studio session… the list goes on. You may also periodically post a quick video question to your existing followers.  They’ll love giving their opinion and this makes them feel like they’re more a part of your music and what you’re about.
