Selling Beats on SOUNDCLICK 2015/16 – Is Soundclick DEAD?

The decline of traffic to Soundclick over the years has had many online music producers asking the question: “Is Soundclick DEAD?” Well today I share my thoughts on selling beats on Soundclick in 2015 / 2016.

This question’s come up in many discussion boards and forums lately, and here’s the [paraphrased] question I received via e-mail:

I have a question that I been fighting with for a while now. Is Soundclick still a MUST for lead capturing and having an overall presence online? I’ve read many forums and charts too that show that its traffic is on the decline. What are your thoughts on SoundClick now in 2015 and the future of it?

Would you still recommend it despite the claims that it’s dying? If so, why? Thanks.

So why is Soundclick traffic declining?

I personally think it starts with fact that they haven’t revamped their website in many years, even to keep up with the current website standards for 2015. Namely, they continue to use an outdated (non-responsive) layout and Adobe Flash (another outdated technology in our ever-growing mobile world) as their primary music/beat players.

As you can see from this website traffic estimator, Soundclick’s traffic has decreased nearly 43% within the past year – a drop from nearly 2 million to less than 1.1 million visits per month.

While this is true that the website seems to be going downhill, there is still a ton of quality traffic going to the site – a.k.a. music artists looking to buy your beats!

And overall, it’s still very much an authority website according to the global and U.S. Alexa rankings.

Should you be Selling Beats on Soundclick in 2015?

Well here was my response to the e-mail:

“Is there any particular reason why you wouldn’t want to have a presence on Soundclick? Even if it’s partially declined over the years.

As I always preach, the idea is to be everywhere with a heavy focus on your own, personal website.  As you know, there is still a lot of quality traffic going to Soundclick.

So if you’re asking: Should you go “all-in” on selling beats on Soundclick in 2015?  My answer has always been ‘no’.

Alternatively, if you’re asking: Should you have a presence there to take up additional real estate on the web and supplement your beat sales?  Well then, my answer is ‘yes’.”

In my personal opinion, your $10/month investment for a VIP SC page is still very much worth it for the extra traffic you get on the platform – but I’ve always been against using SC as a replacement for your primary website.  Definitely take advantage of these types third-party sites for maximum exposure selling your beats online.

Ranking in the Charts and Paid Promotion

Over the years, Soundclick‘s higher tier promotion services have become quite pricey.  And depending on your paid advertising budget, it may make it quite difficult to compete with the regular, heavy-hitters in the primary charts.

However, my focus is typically on ranking high in the sub-genre charts – like East Coast, or Underground. Why?  Because it’s relatively easy to rank in these secondary categories using the basic banner ad promotions – only having to dish out a minimum of $10 for 10,000 ad impressions at a time.

Conclusion

SC may be on the decline, but I wouldn’t rule it out just yet!  Your primary focus should still be on building authority for your own personal website and blog, but there’s no reason you can’t also be generating additional beat sales on Soundclick too, right?

I hope this article was helpful and offered you some insight into selling beats on Soundclick in 2015. Good luck in the charts 🙂
